Choose between learning to dive and your first certified trip
If you have never qualified, book a named learn-to-dive course that includes the liveaboard, rather than a certified-diver berth. Pro Dive Cairns provides a concrete example: its four-day eLearning Open Water programme combines online theory before arrival, one compulsory practical training day in Cairns and a three-day, two-night outer-reef trip. The first four ocean dives are training dives. Completing the required skills is part of the course, not something a cabin reservation guarantees.
If you already hold a qualification but have few dives, the useful question is how the operator supports new certified divers. Compare a short outer-reef stay with explicitly booked guiding against a remote itinerary that expects current, buoyancy and tender-entry experience. These are different holidays even when both are sold as liveaboards.
Pro Dive Cairns: four-day eLearning Open Water courseOceanQuest: a short stay with guiding booked separately
Divers Den’s OceanQuest certified programme offers overnight stays on Norman, Saxon and Hastings reefs, with a transfer from its day boat. It includes diving equipment, but certified guests can choose buddy diving or pay for a professional guide. Equipment tuition is not the same as having an instructor beside you on every dive.
For a newly qualified diver who wants supervision, reserve the guided option when booking. The operator separately requires a guide, at an extra charge, for guests who have not made a night dive before. Do not buy a standard certified-diver berth assuming that all dives are led, that private tuition is included or that the advertised maximum number of dives is compulsory. A one-night stay limits the time committed to sleeping aboard; it does not promise calm seas or easy conditions.
Divers Den: OceanQuest certified divingPro Dive Cairns: distinguish the course from the certified package
The three-day, two-night certified trip and the four-day learn-to-dive course share the outer-reef setting but have different training content. Pro Dive advertises up to 11 dives for the certified trip; its course describes up to nine, starting with four training dives. The course’s extra shore day matters when reserving accommodation and flights.
The certified itinerary says a guide will be offered on the first dive to divers who have not dived for a while. A dedicated private instructor for the liveaboard is a separate offered service. First-dive help does not establish that every later dive has the same supervision. For a rusty diver, arrange the appropriate refresher or training before departure rather than using an advertised dive count as a readiness test.
Pro Dive Cairns: three-day outer reef liveaboardWhy Galapagos Sky is a different experience level
Galapagos Sky describes strong currents, cooler water and variable visibility, with tender diving and sometimes negative back-roll entries. Its how-we-dive page recommends 50–100 open-water dives, current experience and recent diving. Those are operator recommendations, not a universal liveaboard minimum or proof that reaching a number makes someone ready.
This is not an equivalent substitute for a Cairns training trip. The ability to manage entries, stay with the group and reboard a small boat in choppy seas matters independently of a certification card. Keep the named boat, itinerary and departure requirements together; neither a guide nor an Advanced course booking removes the need for the relevant experience.
Galapagos Sky: how we diveComplete the medical and swimming requirements before paying for travel
Pro Dive’s entry-level course requires a medical declaration and states that a positive response needs assessment by a medical practitioner, preferably experienced in diving medicine. Its published course test is a 200-metre swim or 300-metre snorkel plus a ten-minute float or tread. Divers Den also requires its medical questionnaire for certified participants; some conditions or medications can prevent participation.
These are programme conditions, not a diagnosis or personal clearance from this guide. Read the exact operator form early enough to obtain any required assessment. For the Pro Dive course, the operator specifies a medical certificate within 90 days of starting when one is required. Being able to book online does not mean that these requirements have been met.
Pro Dive Cairns: four-day eLearning Open Water courseBefore reserving: state the support you need
Send the operator your qualification, approximate logged dives, date of last dive and relevant experience, together with the actual programme and departure. Ask for the included supervision in writing: buddy-only diving, group guiding, private guiding or a course. If the answer is a paid guide, include that cost in the comparison rather than treating the cheapest berth as the complete price.
For a first liveaboard, choose the programme whose published activities and booked support match what you can currently do. Leave the dive schedule flexible enough to miss a session if you are tired or uncomfortable, and take any flight or altitude plans to the operator before fixing the onward itinerary. This is a booking guide, not a dive plan or a safety endorsement.
