Komodo liveaboards: Labuan Bajo trips or a Bali cruise?
Compare short Komodo diving trips from Labuan Bajo with longer Bali cruises, north and south routes, diver requirements and the extras outside the fare.
Choose the embarkation port first
A Komodo liveaboard can mean a short diving trip from Labuan Bajo or a longer cruise from Bali that also visits other islands. For a compact Komodo trip, compare Labuan Bajo departures such as Mikumba Diving’s Nusantara. For a wider journey with dives along the way, compare Mermaid I and Mermaid II’s Bali programmes. Their port, duration and route differences matter more than a shared Komodo label.[1][2] Mikumba advertises three- to five-day Komodo trips; Mermaid describes ten-day trips on Mermaid I and eight-day trips on Mermaid II. These are published programme examples, not available departures. Select the route and dates before treating any cabin price as comparable.[1][2]

| Compare | Nusantara from Labuan Bajo [2] | Mermaid I or II from Bali [1] |
|---|---|---|
| Starting point | Labuan Bajo, Flores; fly to Komodo Airport (LBJ) | Benoa Harbour, Bali; airport code DPS |
| Published trip length | Three to five days; named central/north and south/central samples | Ten days on Mermaid I or eight days on Mermaid II |
| Route emphasis | Komodo park areas, with land visits such as Rinca and Padar in the samples | Komodo plus a wider island route; Sangeang and Saleh Bay feature in advertised programmes |
| Best planning fit | A shorter trip focused on the Komodo area | A longer diving journey starting in Bali |
| Travel consequence | Add the flight to Labuan Bajo and a pre-trip check-in night | Match the exact start and finish port; some Mermaid routes finish in Maumere rather than Bali |
Labuan Bajo: plan to arrive before check-in
Mikumba identifies Komodo International Airport (LBJ) as its arrival airport, with connections via Bali or Jakarta. Guests booked through email or an agent are told to visit its Labuan Bajo dive centre by 16:00 the day before departure to check in and prepare equipment. Its sample trips then meet at 08:00. A flight arriving that morning does not satisfy that published check-in arrangement.[2] The three-day central/north sample lists nine dives and returns to Labuan Bajo around 15:00–16:00, depending on the final dive location. That return time is not a same-day flight recommendation: the itinerary includes diving on the last day. Arrange the post-diving flight interval with the operator and follow current diving medical guidance, allowing a land night where needed.[2]
[2] Mikumba: check-in, airport and sample schedulesCentral and north versus south and central
Mikumba’s central/north samples name Batu Bolong or a manta dive in the central park, then Castle Rock, Crystal Rock and The Cauldron farther north. Its four-day south/central sample instead includes dives around Padar, such as Three Sisters, Pilarsteen and Secret Garden, before returning to central sites. Pick the named programme that covers the areas you want; do not assume an extra day means the boat visits the south.[2] These are proposed routes. Mikumba explicitly makes site choices dependent on tides, weather and sea conditions. A published site name is useful for comparing route scope, but it does not promise that a particular current-sensitive site will be dived on your sailing.[2]
[2] Mikumba: central/north and south/central routesBali cruises: include the journey, not just Komodo days
Mermaid’s Komodo page describes Bali round trips and also links to Bali–Komodo–Maumere programmes. Its Bali embarkation instructions name Benoa Passenger Pier, with boarding between 13:00 and 15:00 for a planned 16:00 departure. Included arrival/departure-day transfers cover DPS airport and listed areas including Kuta, Sanur, Nusa Dua, Jimbaran, Benoa and Seminyak; central and northern Bali transfers can cost extra.[1] The advertised route can include Sangeang and Saleh Bay as well as Komodo. Choose it because you want that wider cruise, rather than assuming all eight or ten days are spent inside the park. Check both endpoints on the dated itinerary before buying flights; a Bali start does not establish a Bali finish.[1]
[1] Mermaid: route variants, transfers and boardingWhen to go and how cold is the water?
Mermaid recommends May to November for Komodo and identifies December to March as the rainy season. That is not evidence that every Komodo boat stops in those months: Mikumba advertises local trips through the year, except for its February maintenance break.[1][2] Mermaid lists typical water temperatures of 27–30°C in the north and 21–27°C in the south. Use the colder part of your actual route when planning thermal protection; one warm-water number for Komodo can conceal a substantial difference. Ask for recent conditions for the programme you are considering rather than using a month label as a guarantee of visibility, currents or access.[1]
[1] Mermaid: season and north/south water temperaturesExperience requirements are operator-specific
Mikumba publishes a minimum of Open Water certification, ten dives and a Deep Adventure dive, which it says can be taken onboard. It also requires recent diving within the last six to twelve months or a refresher. Those are Mikumba’s published entry conditions, not a park-wide rule and not proof that every site on its sample route suits a newly qualified diver.[2] Before paying, give the operator your certification, logged dives, last-dive date and experience in currents. Have it confirm the planned route, any training arrangement and your acceptance. This guide does not teach current-diving techniques or assess personal fitness to dive. Mikumba requires insurance details at check-in and specifies travel, personal diving and cancellation cover, including recompression treatment and cover appropriate to certification depth.[2]
[2] Mikumba: qualifications, recency and insuranceCompare the fare with the equipment and park extras
Mikumba includes room and board, guides, tanks, weights and a full equipment set excluding the dive computer. A computer is mandatory and can be rented separately. National park, port and other local government fees are excluded and payable on arrival in Indonesian rupiah.[2] Mermaid includes listed transfers, meals and snacks, listed soft/hot drinks, tanks, weights and guiding. Its exclusions include park/port fees, Nitrox, rental equipment and any applicable fuel surcharge. Do not compare an equipment-inclusive Nusantara quote with a Mermaid cabin fare without adding the equipment you need. Obtain current compulsory fee amounts for the actual departure; neither inclusion list is a final whole-trip price.[1][2]

Once you have chosen Labuan Bajo or Bali, compare dated departures with the same route scope and occupancy basis. Keep the fare, fees, equipment, flights and land nights separate. Include pre-trip check-in accommodation, post-diving land time, domestic connections, dive baggage and insurance as well as the cruise. A shorter local trip and a longer Bali cruise solve different travel plans; compare their total cost only after those differences are explicit.
