Which liveaboard deal is actually cheaper?
The useful comparison is the final price for the same boat, departure, cabin and occupancy, with the same diving extras. A lower advertised fare can lose its advantage once compulsory fees, equipment, Nitrox or a sole-use cabin charge are added. If two offers cover different routes or nights, they are alternative trips rather than competing prices for the same trip.
This guide explains how to compare liveaboard diving deals, with named operator examples checked on 26 October 2026. It is not a live list of available cabins. A promotion page establishes an advertised offer, not that your preferred berth remains bookable.
A dated offer: Mermaid II, 17–24 July 2027
Mermaid’s Komodo Special Offer page advertises 10% off Mermaid II’s Bali–Komodo–Bali trip on 17–24 July 2027. That is a specific vessel, week and round-trip route, not a discount across all Komodo departures or a one-way Bali-to-Flores sailing.[8]
Use the page as a lead for a written quote. It does not provide a complete cabin-by-cabin payable total, the discount basis for every extra, or proof of remaining inventory. Request the undiscounted eligible fare, discounted fare, cabin category, occupancy, exclusions and offer expiry together. Do not apply this 2027 promotion to fee amounts labelled for 2026 elsewhere on the site.

| Your decision | Record for each offer | What would make it a different purchase |
|---|---|---|
| Departure identity | Boat, named programme, start/end dates and both ports | A Bali round trip is not a Bali–Maumere crossing |
| Cabin and occupancy | Cabin category, bed arrangement and per-person or whole-cabin price | A shared berth is not guaranteed sole use |
| Mandatory cruise charges | Park/port fees, tax and applicable fuel charges, including payment currency | A payable-locally line with no amount leaves the total unresolved |
| Diving purchases | Nitrox if qualified, exact rental items, courses and any required private guide | Included Nitrox does not include Nitrox certification |
| Conditions | Deposit, balance deadline, cancellation basis and amendment rules | A cheaper fare can put more money at risk earlier |
Mermaid and Emperor illustrate different inclusion policies
Mermaid’s FAQ lists park and port fees, Nitrox and rental equipment outside the fare, along with any applicable fuel surcharge. It also says onboard purchases and fees are subject to 11% VAT. Obtain an itemised tax-inclusive quote for the actual departure rather than treating the promotional fare as the amount you will spend onboard.[6]
Emperor’s No Hidden Extras article lists marine park fees, port fees, fuel surcharges and Nitrox for certified divers as included. It separately excludes personal purchases such as rental equipment, alcoholic drinks, gratuities, visas, insurance and optional upgrades. Those policies explain what to compare; they do not establish which operator is cheaper when the boats, routes and fares differ.[3]
[3] Emperor: No Hidden Extras inclusions and exclusionsCalculate the saving on the eligible part
Use the discount only on the fare or charge the seller explicitly makes eligible. If the quoted eligible fare is F and the discount is 10%, the discounted eligible fare is 0.90 × F. Add undiscounted compulsory charges and your chosen extras afterward. This is a calculation rule, not a quoted fare.
For two quotes covering the same departure and occupancy, compare discounted fare plus all required cruise charges plus the extras you will actually buy. Then add any difference in flights, baggage, transfers and land nights. Unknown charges stay “not yet quoted”; they cannot be entered as zero. Keep optional spending outside the mandatory subtotal so you can see what the booking itself commits you to.
Loyalty discounts do not automatically stack
Emperor advertises a 5% Friends of Emperor discount for returning guests on new liveaboard bookings in its named destinations. Its booking page says discounts, offers, vouchers and credits cannot be combined unless explicitly stated. The same paragraph also refers to a maximum of two eligible discounts and automatic selection of the highest discount.[4]
That wording is not permission to add loyalty and sale percentages yourself. Ask the seller to show the permitted combination and the resulting payable amount on the invoice. Compare that amount with the other quote, not with a saving assembled from separate promotional banners.
[4] Emperor: returning-guest discount and promotion conditionsLast-minute prices also change the cancellation exposure
Emperor’s published individual-booking terms require full payment within 60 days of Red Sea, Maldives or Indonesia liveaboard departure, and specify a 100% cancellation fee at that point. Its Solomon Islands window is 90 days. Group and charter terms differ. These are operator terms, not a rule for every liveaboard seller.[9]
The same terms retain a surcharge clause for material economic changes, with notice and cancellation provisions. Read that alongside the inclusion promise rather than interpreting a marketing headline as an unconditional guarantee against every later change. A lower fare is less useful if the payment deadline or cancellation loss is unacceptable to you.
[9] Emperor: payment, cancellation and surcharge termsA solo offer must say what happens to the other berth
For a solo traveller, a reduced single supplement, a shared-berth fare and a guaranteed private cabin are different offers. Ask whether another guest can be assigned to the cabin, whether any same-sex matching is guaranteed, and whether the discount applies to the supplement or the whole fare. A supplement reduction alone does not establish the same percentage saving on the total.
Compare the final one-person invoice for the privacy you want. Do not pay for a shared berth assuming the empty bed will remain empty.
Resolve diving acceptance before paying
Discounts do not alter the experience requirements of the departure. Send the operator your certification, logged dives, last-dive date and relevant current-diving experience, and resolve any training or private-guide requirement before committing. An advertised Nitrox inclusion is useful only if you hold the necessary qualification and the operator accepts you for the programme.
Keep the dated offer, itemised invoice and applicable terms together. The comparison is ready when you know what you will pay, what you will receive, which charges remain variable and what you lose if you cancel.
