What insurance do you need for a diving liveaboard?
Liveaboard diving insurance needs to address two different losses: medical treatment and evacuation after a diving accident, and prepaid travel costs if you cannot take or complete the trip. One policy may combine them; a dive accident policy alone should not be assumed to cover cancellation, missed boarding or lost baggage.
Start with the conditions of your booked boat, then match them to the actual policy wording. Galapagos Sky requires each diver to have dive accident insurance and to record the company and policy number on the application. Emperor’s terms require comprehensive travel and diving insurance for the full trip duration, including recompression, evacuation, cancellation, disruption and possessions. Those are operator requirements, not a worldwide legal rule.
Emperor Divers: booking terms, section 4.1Dive accident cover and travel cover do different jobs
DAN’s dive accident insurance describes cover for eligible accident medical expenses, including hyperbaric treatment and emergency transportation. Its separate comparison with travel protection explains why a cancellation or baggage policy is not a substitute. The issued policy and certificate govern the claim; a benefit listed on a sales page is not a promise that every incident qualifies.
For a liveaboard, read the medical and evacuation sections together. Establish whether an evacuation from the vessel, onward treatment and any return-home arrangements fall within the selected benefits and limits. DAN states that it must arrange transportation for covered emergency medical evacuation fees to be paid. Do not assume you can commission any transport yourself and automatically reclaim it.
DAN: dive accident insurance and evacuation conditionsDepth, qualifications and supervision must match the trip
Read the insured-activities section for depth limits, certification requirements and any condition requiring a guide or divemaster. DAN’s comparison warns that some travel policies place these restrictions on scuba cover. A policy marketed for adventure travel may still exclude the diving you intend to do.
Compare the conditions with your certification and the operator’s actual supervision model. An instructor being aboard is not the same as an escorted dive. All Star’s Blackbeard’s FAQ describes its dives as unescorted, with specified exceptions and private guiding available by advance arrangement. If your insurer requires continuous guided diving, resolve that mismatch before paying for the trip. Buying insurance neither upgrades your qualification nor establishes medical fitness.
All Star Blackbeard’s: guiding arrangementsGalapagos Sky’s chamber donation is not insurance
Galapagos Sky explicitly says its hyperbaric chamber donation does not cover medical expenses. It requires a dive accident policy or an appropriate rider to travel insurance. Keep that payment separate from the policy in your budget and documents.
This is a useful distinction when comparing boats: a chamber contribution, an operator’s liability cover and your own accident insurance are different things. Carry the certificate, policy number and assistance contact offline so the crew can identify your cover without relying on onboard connectivity.
Galapagos Sky: dive accident insurance requirementsProtect the deposit and missed departure separately
Buy suitable cancellation protection when you incur non-refundable costs rather than treating it only as a document to collect just before boarding. Emperor’s individual liveaboard terms specify a 20% cancellation fee at 61 days or more before departure for Red Sea, Maldives and Indonesia trips, and 100% at 60 days or less. Its Solomon Islands individual terms use a different 91/90-day boundary. Group and charter terms differ again. These are cancellation liabilities, not automatic insured benefits.
For a flight delay, read the missed-departure or travel-disruption clauses for the event covered, delay threshold, evidence and financial limit. A policy paying for an overnight hotel may not reimburse a missed liveaboard. All Star warns that delayed arrivals can miss boarding; do not budget on the boat waiting for you.
Emperor Divers: individual cancellation schedulesBefore buying: obtain an answer tied to your exact policy
Give the insurer your country of residence, destination, trip dates, planned diving type and maximum planned depth, certification and guiding arrangement. Disclose medical history as the application requires. Ask for the relevant wording or written confirmation where a condition is unclear; a generic assurance that scuba is included leaves too much unresolved.
Check the named insured, territorial scope, start and end dates, benefit limits, excesses and exclusions on the issued documents. For cameras and dive equipment, distinguish accidental damage, baggage loss and equipment lost during a covered diving accident. DAN’s accident product describes the last of these; it is not blanket cover for every flooded housing or stolen camera.
DAN’s cited product page says availability and coverage vary by state, province and plan. Use the product available for your residence rather than assuming a US comparison applies worldwide. This guide explains what to compare, not which policy is suitable for an individual or whether a particular claim will be paid.
