Start with the sites you would regret missing
A liveaboard makes sense when your priority is a moving dive route and you accept sleeping aboard for the whole programme. A dive resort makes sense when you want to return to the same room on land, mix diving with other activities or revisit nearby sites. Neither label guarantees easier diving, a lower price or more dives.
Two concrete examples show the difference. Galapagos Sky publishes a seven-night cruise with three full days around Wolf and Darwin. Papua Diving offers fixed bases at Kri Eco and Sorido Bay on Kri Island, with boat dives and buddy-team jetty diving. These are examples of different trip structures, not like-for-like destinations.

| Your decision | Liveaboard programme | Dive-resort stay |
|---|---|---|
| Where you sleep | A cabin aboard the vessel throughout the cruise | A room or bungalow at one fixed base |
| Site coverage | Defined by the dated route and conditions; can move between regions | Defined by the resort’s day-boat reach and any house reef |
| Between dives | Use onboard space; land visits depend on the programme | Return to the resort; other activities depend on that property |
| Repeated photography | Repeat sites only where the programme allows it | A suitable house reef can allow repeated local visits within its rules |
| Cost comparison | Cabin, cruise inclusions, mandatory extras and port transfers | Room, meals, dive package, boat excursions and arrival transfers |
| Non-diving partner | Needs a worthwhile onboard or excursion programme of their own | Needs actual property activities and a suitable non-diving package |
When the liveaboard route is worth the commitment
Galapagos Sky’s Ocean Wonders sample programme starts and finishes at San Cristobal and allocates three full days to Wolf and Darwin. The operator lists 18 dives across the seven-night cruise, with weather-dependent changes. If those northern dive sites are the purpose of your trip, evaluate that published cruise rather than assuming a hotel and unrelated day trips deliver the same coverage.
The commitment includes the crossings, cabin and fixed departure. Sky describes advanced conditions including strong currents, variable visibility, cold water and negative small-boat entries, with recommended experience of 50–100 open-water dives. More remote access does not establish suitability for an inexperienced diver.
Galapagos Sky: Ocean Wonders seven-night itinerary and requirementsWhen a fixed dive base gives you more useful flexibility
Papua Diving’s Kri Eco and Sorido Bay resorts offer an Exploration Package and a pre-bookable Unlimited Diving Package. Its FAQ lists four guided boat dives per day with Friday-night and Saturday exceptions, plus unguided jetty dives requiring a buddy team. This is a useful alternative for someone wanting local boat diving and repeated access from one base.
Read the exceptions before comparing dive counts. The same FAQ says Saturday boat crew and dive guides are unavailable until 6pm, while jetty diving continues and night boat diving resumes from 6pm. The headline “unlimited” is not a promise of guided boats all day, every day. Conditions and the resort’s dive procedures still govern access.
Papua Diving: packages, jetty diving and Saturday servicesTravelling with a non-diver or skipping dives
At the Kri Island resorts, Papua Diving describes snorkeling, kayaks, stand-up paddle boards and birdwatching options. Some services have limited availability or additional costs. The non-diving Exploration Package is a more relevant starting point than buying a diver’s package and simply leaving dives unused.
A liveaboard can suit a non-diver if the actual cruise has worthwhile snorkeling, spa facilities or land visits, but a dive schedule alone does not establish that. On either type of holiday, calculate the price you still pay if you skip a dive. Included diving is not automatically refundable, and a resort booking does not automatically offer day-by-day cancellation flexibility.
Papua Diving: packages, jetty diving and Saturday servicesCompare a complete quote, not a headline nightly rate
Put both offers in the same currency for the same number of nights and actual occupancy. For the boat, include the cabin, park or port charges, Nitrox if needed, equipment, transfers, tips and travel insurance. For the resort, include the room, meals, dive package, boat surcharges, equipment and arrival transfers. Keep optional extras separate from unavoidable charges.
Papua Diving lists flights, rental dive equipment, marine park fees and canned or alcoholic drinks outside its packages. Sky lists cabin accommodation, meals, Nitrox and departure-date island airport/dock transfers inside its cruise rate, while flights, park charges, rental gear, gratuities and insurance are outside. Neither basket can be compared fairly using the room or cabin price alone. Obtain dated quotes rather than treating these inclusion examples as a current payable total.
Papua Diving: packages, jetty diving and Saturday servicesA practical choice for photographers and first trips
Choose the boat if a specific route earns its cost and you are comfortable with its conditions and cabin arrangement. Choose the resort if local repeat dives, a fixed room or a partner’s separate plans matter more than regional coverage. For photography, distinguish a camera-friendly vessel from a dated teaching workshop; for a first trip, choose conditions and operator support before maximising the advertised dive count.
