Philippines liveaboard diving: Tubbataha, Visayas or Coron?

Choose between offshore Tubbataha, Visayas reef and macro routes, and Coron wreck programmes, with named boats, joining ports and experience differences.

Choose the diving region before choosing a Philippines liveaboard

Choose Tubbataha for an offshore reef-focused trip with an overnight crossing from Puerto Princesa. Choose the Visayas for a sequence of island reefs, walls and macro sites, with Malapascua and Southern Leyte included on some routes. Choose a Coron programme when wrecks are the main reason for the trip. These choices change your arrival airport, likely sailing season and the diving skills you need. A boat can change regions during the year. Buying a cabin on a familiar vessel does not secure the same route, embarkation port or wildlife opportunities as a review of its previous trip. Start with the named programme and departure dates, then compare cabin layout, fare and extras.

Tubbataha: spend the week on the park, not travelling between regions

Tubbataha is a dedicated liveaboard choice rather than a short day-trip add-on to a Palawan holiday. Aggressor describes a 12–15-hour crossing; its sample seven-night programme targets about 20 dives, with weather-dependent sites. Philippine Siren’s National Park route is six nights. Count time at the reefs and the final diving day, not just accommodation nights. It is also the clearest experience filter in this comparison: Master Liveaboards requires Advanced Open Water or equivalent, 50 logged dives and comfort in currents for its park route. Do not assume a Philippines-wide beginner label applies. Search March–June departures first, but use the exact operator calendar rather than treating this as a national season shared by all three regions.

Visayas: read the island sequence, especially for Malapascua

Atlantis Infiniti’s published Visayas North outline boards at Atlantis Dumaguete, then visits Pamilacan, Anda in Bohol, Sogod Bay in Southern Leyte, Kimud Shoal and Gato Island, Malapascua and Capitancillo before returning to Dumaguete. It suits a diver who wants several island environments without moving hotels and dive bags between them. The named shark sites are opportunities, not guaranteed encounters. Aggressor’s Best of Visayas offers seven- and ten-night programmes in its advertised June–February window. Its alternative samples reach different combinations of Malapascua, Bohol, Southern Leyte, Apo Island and Dauin, with the route chosen for conditions and logistics. If Malapascua or Southern Leyte is your priority, compare a programme explicitly covering it rather than buying any trip labelled Visayas. A southern route can be a good choice for reef and macro variety without answering that northern-island goal. For a resort extension, Infiniti’s Dumaguete start and finish removes an extra inter-island repositioning step. A Mactan or Cebu departure may suit a different flight plan, but it is not the same transfer as a Dumaguete resort pickup.

Coron and Apo Reef: distinguish the wreck route from the port

Aggressor currently describes Coron trips in November–December on Philippines Aggressor, with a seven-night sample joining around Coron/Busuanga and combining Apo Reef with Coron wreck sites. It separately advertises ten-night Coron–Batangas trips in January–February, in either direction. A one-way programme requires a flight and transfer plan for both ends; it is not a return sailing with a different name. Atlantis Adventurer describes its Apo Reef and Coron charter in January to early March, embarking and disembarking at Atlantis Puerto Galera. That is a useful counterexample to booking flights from the headline destination alone: a Coron-containing route need not board in Coron. Choose this cluster if wrecks are a priority, but keep exterior wreck observation separate from penetration. A wreck on the advertised route does not establish permission, training or equipment for an overhead dive. Match any proposed entry to your qualification and the operator’s specific plan; otherwise select exterior wreck and reef dives.

Compare boats without transferring one vessel’s rules to another

Philippine Siren, Philippines Aggressor and Aggressor II, Atlantis Adventurer and Atlantis Infiniti are named options, not one uniform Philippines product. Adventurer publishes 16 passenger places and eight staterooms; that specification should not be copied onto Infiniti. Its minimum age 15, Advanced Open Water with 25 dives and mandatory dive accident insurance are also Adventurer’s published vessel conditions, not a substitute for Siren’s stricter Tubbataha route minimum. Atlantis’s older Azores URLs now redirect into Adventurer pages, while the park authority’s list still uses Azores in one entry. Use the vessel named on the actual contract and the programme page together. None of these public descriptions provides an independent safety inspection by this site. Master Liveaboards describes much Visayas diving as suitable across experience levels, while noting currents and exposed sites. That regional description does not mean every dive on every boat is suitable for a newly certified diver. For a first liveaboard, favour the specific route whose requirements and planned dives match your recent experience, rather than selecting the lowest country-level minimum.

Price the same trip before comparing fares

Use the same number of nights, same regional programme and equivalent cabin occupancy when comparing quotes. Then separate the charter fare from domestic flights, joining transfers, park and port fees, fuel surcharges, Nitrox, rental equipment and the hotel night before boarding. A sold-out promotional fare is not a bookable budget. For Tubbataha the park authority lists a PHP 5,000 visitor conservation fee, but an operator can invoice a bundled marine/port payment separately. Visayas fees depend on the places actually visited. Ask for those line items on the departure quote rather than applying the Tubbataha fee to every Philippines trip. Nitrox being available also does not mean it is included. Arrive at the joining base the previous day where possible. Master Liveaboards recommends this for Manila, Cebu or Puerto Princesa connections. Leave the final-dive-to-flight interval separate from the advertised checkout time; a morning return to port alone does not qualify an immediate flight.
